Forensic science aims to serve society by advancing justice. It is important that forensic scientists should be aware of waste disposal issues so that they may take actions, wherever possible, to reduce any potential hazard and consequently reduce unnecessary pollution. The waste produced in the course of forensic laboratory activities carries a higher potential for infection than any other type of waste. The present scenario of waste management in Indian forensic labs is critical. However there is an emerging concern regarding waste management, particularly as a result of notification of Bio Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 which makes it mandatory for the health care establishments to ensure that such waste is handled without any adverse effect to human health and environment. Forensic science laboratories being not a part of health care establishment, these rules are hardly applied to them. This article intends to create awareness amongst all concerned regarding handling and proper disposal of waste in forensic labs.
