Abstract

Anaesthetic overdose is a common problem encountered in the hospitals and clinics. The amount of anaesthetic given to a patient is responsible for the duration and maintainance of anaesthesia during surgery. Overdose of anaesthesia leads to severe complications and deaths in most of the cases. Forensic analysts are looking for various analytical aspects of anaesthetic detection in various body fluids and methods of detection. This paper provides a summary of the various anaesthetics, their metabolism, by products, methods of extraction from various body fluids using automated instrumentation techniques, detection by chemical analysis, various spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods and other methods, comparison of various methods in terms of detection limits, limit of quantification and other parameters.
