Abstract

Study of chronic bidi smoking and illicit liquor intoxication on serum lipid levels and lipid peroxidation in males from lower socio-economic background. Total 320 subjects, who were classified as non-alcoholic + non smoking healthy controls (n = 80), alcoholics (n = 80), smokers (n = 80), and alcoholics + smokers (n = 80) males. Serum LDL - cholesterol, triglyceride, MDA and nitrate levels found significantly higher, whereas serum HDL-cholesterol level was found to be significantly low and was more prominent in chronic alcoholics, who consume illicit liquor and smoke bidi (p<0.001).

Serum MDA positively correlated with LDL -cholesterol, triglyceride and negatively correlated with serum HDL- cholesterol in study population (p<0.05).
