Abstract

Sex determination is one of the essential prerequisites for identification of the individual. The skull is probably the second best area of the skeleton for determining sex following pelvis. Diverse techniques are based either on visually determinable descriptive features of the cranium or on exact measurements of various parts of the cranium and their ratios. In the present study, skulls of 60 individuals of known sex (30 of either) of Indian Punjab region were studied to assess the significance of zygomatic bone in sex determination by a series of metric and nonmetric variants. Upon statistical analysis, the predictive value of sexual dimorphism of six measurements on zygomatic bone and two non metric traits was 75% and 71.7% respectively.
