Acute poisoning with cocktail of multiple drug ingestion: a report of 3 cases in rural hospital of Punjab

Multi drug overdose poisoning is becoming an increasing cause of concern amongst the youth with or without psychotic illness. Antipsychotic and anti depressant medications which are being increasingly prescribed in psychosis are used for suicidal purpose. Also easy accessibility of prescription and controlled drugs in India has led to drug addiction among the youth which has becomea major socio-economic burden on the society. we have reported two cases of multiple drug overdose poisoning from rural Punjab, first case was of alprazolam, olanzapine and promethazine overdose and the second patient had ingested alprazolam, risperidone and sertraline in multiple doses in a state of depression. Both were brought in unconscious state to the hospital and gradually recovered with emergent evaluation, decontamination procedure and supportive treatment. The third case was of a drug addict who had consumedan overdose of phensedyl syrup and diazepam. Rapid hospitalization and optimal treatment measures for phensedyl and diazepam poisoning helped in achieving a favorable outcome.
