Abstract

Ammonia is a colourless gas with an extremely pungent smell. Its endothermic nature of going from liquid to gaseous state has found application as a refrigerant.

We studied 29 cases of accidental poisoning in our institute brought in from Taloja Industrial Area after leakage from an Ammonia tanker nearby.

The study revealed milder effects principally on the respiratory tract, probably because of less time of exposure and quick medical aid.

Industries using Ammonia should undertake precautionary measures to prevent leakage, as its prolonged exposure can have deleterious consequences
