Abstract

Barbiturates are white, crystalline, odourless powders, with a bitter taste. It is a group of drugs known as sedative-hypnotics, which are generally describes their sleep inducing and anxiety decreasing effects. It act as depressant on the central nervous system. They are basically derived from malonic acid and urea. In India, Forensic Science Laboratories run by Government under the Home ministry usually carry out this. The sqmples have to be analyzed by the forensic toxicologist/chemists/scientist. This article deals with the screening/spot test for barbiturates. It attempts to simplify the standard procedures in a step-wise manner, which can be of handy reference for the forensic toxicologist. It is in continuation of Toxicology Manual Series-XV, Screening/spot test for tranquilisers Volume 13(4),2011.
