A one year study was undertaken from September 2011 to August 2012 to find out the poisoning deaths which were autopsied at BIMS Hospital, Belgaum, a referral Medical College District Hospital catering to the needs of general public of Belgaum district.
Out of 915 autopsies conducted, 230 were deaths due to poisoning. Maximum victims were in the age group of 21 - 30 years. Males outnumbered females in the ratio 2.3: 1. Organo phosphorus compound was the commonly used poison. Most of the cases were suicidal in nature and belonged to rural area.
