Fatal strangulated inguinal hernia: a case report and review of literature

A deaf and dumb elderly male brought to hospital with large right sided inguino-scrotal swelling. On clinical examination diagnosis of right sided strangulated indirect inguinal hernia was made. While the patient was being prepared for surgery, he expired despite all resuscitative efforts. On post-mortem examination part of ileum was found incarcerated in the hernia sac and gross ischemic changes were found. Histopathological study also confirmed ischemic necrosis in the affected bowel. In this article, we have emphasised on sudden fatal outcome of strangulated hernia if prompt treatment is initiated early and reviewed the relevant literature.
