A thin-layer chromatographic method for separation and detection of six commonly used antidepressant drugs is described. These drugs after separation react with free chlorine to give corresponding chloramines which reacts with o-tolidine to give blue coloured spots. The limit of detection for antidepressants citalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline, amitriptyline, imiprimine and venlafaxine with this reagent was found to be 0.2μg, 0.5 μg, 0.1μg, 0.1μg, 0.1μg and 0.2μg per spot respectively.
