Abstract

The clivus is a bone region between dorsum sella and foramen magnum. It can be evaluated very clearly in routine CT scan due to its central location. It is one of the denser part of bony skull & which can be recovered intact from scene of crime & therefore need to be researched as an alternate area for age & sex estimation. The CT head images of 142 males & 136 females of 11–69 years age group of Madhya Pradesh region were chosen. The Clival length was measured on Sagittal reconstructed image. Statistically the mean clival length ± SD (4.608 ± 0.315)cm of male was found significantly larger than female (4.391 ± 0.247)cm. Using Analysis of variance 67.61% of male & 77.94% of female clival length were sexed correctly. It was concluded that the CT measurement of clivus length may be used for gender determination in medico-legal cases & may be helpful in radiological diagnosis of some clivus pathology.
