Pesticides have provided man with high quality food at cheaper prices, homes free of pests and helped to control vector borne diseases. Indiscriminate use of toxic pesticides has resulted in burdening the nations’ economy with loss of workforce, direct and indirect adverse effects on human and animal life and environment. The hazards of pesticide use are alarming in the developing world due larger agriculturally based populations, insufficient regulations, lack of surveillance systems, lack of awareness, inadequate access to information systems, and improper storage and disposal techniques. The challenge is to strike a balance between its benefits and risks. Newer methods and integrated approach is required to meet this challenge. We recommend that the Government of the developing countries work out strategies to phase out the use of highly toxic pesticides and bring about increased use of Integrated Pest Management techniques. The pesticide industry should indulge in pesticide stewardship by aiming a life-cycle approach from pesticide production to its safe disposal.
