This present study was conducted on 70 cases of death due to drowning brought for post mortem examination at mortuary of Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital and Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India during the period of June 2010 to May 2012. The aim of this study was to find out the pattern of various gross postmortem findings in cases of Drowning.
We observed that 27.14% cases of drowning were in decomposed state. Froth in mouth and washerwoman hands were observed in majority of cases. Mud/sand/water/froth in trachea and stomach were present in most of cases while no single case was found in which Mud/sand/water present in small intestine. We observed that water in pleural cavities was present in half of cases. We observed that majority of cases of death due to drowning were accidental in nature, followed by suicidal in nature.
