Abstract

The safety profile of normal churn (NC) prepared from root of Plumbago zeylanica L., Operculina turpethum L. and Citrullus colocynthis was investigated in female Sprague Dawley rats as per OECD guidelines against standard churn. Female Sprague Dawley rats received at a dose of 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day of normal and standard churn for 14 days. Animals were observed daily for clinical signs, mortality, physiological and behavioral responses, food intake and body weights. Hematological parameters, serum biochemical and organ histopathological were studied. Daily administration of normal and standard churn at dose of 500 and 1000 mg/kg did not result clinical signs of abnormality, body weight, organ weight did not vary significantly amongst the groups. Some hematological, serum biochemical and histopathological parameter change observed were related exaggerated pharmacological activity of standard and normal churn without any toxic effects which support the safe and sound use of normal churn a remedies for treatment of constipation.
