Abstract

A Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) is a qualified doctor with medical degree (minimum qualification MBBS degree) and registered with Medical Council of India or State Medical Council. The Medical Council of India has given certain rights and privileges to RMPs which are very important to do good medical practice in modern era of multiple challenges.

It is a questionnaire base study to assess awareness of RMPs of their own rights and privileges. The study was carried out at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pune during May-June 2014. In this study total 342 RMPs participated, out of which 44 were Professors, 17 Associate Professors, 50 Assistant Professors, 11 Senior Residents, 24 Tutors/Demonstrators and 196 Postgraduate Residents working in all Pre-clinical, Para-clinical and Clinical departments

It was found that overall correct responses for all 10 questions by all 342 participants were 53.6%. Tutors/Demonstrators have given maximum correct responses (70%) whereas Postgraduate Residents have given minimum correct responses (50%). The maximum correct responses (91%) were observed for the question which was regarding the right to give evidence in Court of Law as an Expert Witness. Maximum incorrect responses (61%) were for the question which was regarding eligibility of doing independent private practice. Minimum correct responses (14%) were for the question which was regarding circumstances under which RMP can refuse to treat the patient once Doctor-Patient relationship is established.
