A Retrospective Study of Fatal Road Traffic Accident Cases

151 cases of fatal road traffic accident cases were brought for autopsy examination during the period from 1^st April 2010 to 31^st December 2013 at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, Imphal. In the present study male to female ratio was 5.3: 1. The commonest age group was 21–30 years and Summer (June to August), recorded the maximum number of cases, 34.43% and most of the cases occurred during 12 noon to 6PM. These accidents occurred mostly in the National Highway, constituting 55.62% and the commonest form of vehicular accident, in the present study, was knocked down cases comprising of 81cases, in which pedestrians were the frequent victims knocked down by two wheelers. Amongst the victims, two wheeler riders were the commonest one and most of them died on the spot, 13.24%. Head was the common site of fatal injury, which constituted for 66.31% of all fatal injuries and the maximum number of death occurred due to intracranial haemorrhages.
