Injury Pattern and Injury Severity Scores in Railway Accidents in Delhi

Pattern of injuries in 215 fatal train accident victims in Northeast Delhi were studied. New Injury Severity Score was calculated and its correlation with period of survival was determined. Males comprised 87.44% of cases. Most common age group involved was 21–30 years. Pedestrians were the victims in 68.84% of cases. Eighty percent of the victims died on the spot. Death was accidental in 92.56% of cases. The region of the body most commonly involved was the head followed by the chest. Sixty percent of the victims belonged to NISS 25–50 group followed by 38.6% to NISS 50–75 group and 1.4% to NISS 0–25 group. There was a negative correlation between NISS and survival period.
