Abstract

Organo phosphorous poisoning is one of the major source of mortality and morbidity in developing country like India. These deaths are common in developing country like India due to the lack of regulation in sales of pesticides and high stress due to various factors in the society.

This paper aims to identify the toxico epidemiology of OP poisoning in Heasragatta, Bangalore, such as the age, sex and the religion of individuals involved in poisoning over a five year period.

Data was collected from medical records from October 2009 to September 2014. These cases are the total of number of cases which were admitted to Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Hesargatta, Bangalore

A total of 1860 poisoning cases were reported with 81 (4.37%) deaths. Majority of poisoning cases were male 1120 (62.72%). The average incidence rate was 1.8 per 1000 population. The average case fatality and mortality rate was found to be 40.51 and 0.07 respectively.

The data generated can help policy makers take decision on the sale and availability of pesticide in this region.
