Pattern of Death in Prisoners in Indore District, Madhya Pradesh: A 06 Years Retrospective Study

Abstract

This study conducted to know the pattern of death in prisoners in Indore. One hundred forty two autopsies were conducted on dead body of prisoners in the mortuary of our institute in six years. Most of the prisoners were male 138 (97.18%) and female prisoner contribute only 04 (02.82%) cases. Maximum number of postmortem 54 (38.03%) cases were conducted in summer followed by winter season 45(31.69%) and least number of postmortem 43 (30.28%) were conducted in monsoon. Year vise distribution of prisoners death was 36/142 cases in year 2008, 18/142 cases in 2009, 22/142 cases in 2010, 21/142 cases in 2011, 17/142 cases in 2012 and 28/142 cases in 2013. Cause of death was determined after performing the autopsy. Most of the prisoners were died due to pathology 115 (80.99%) and most common cause of death was multiple organ pathology which had contributed to 57 (40.14%) cases. Other common pathological causes were lung pathology in 22 (15.49%) cases, cardiac involvement in 18(12.68%) cases, carcinoma in 06 (04.23%), brain pathology in 05 (3.52%), 02 (01.41%) cases kidney and liver involvement separately and 03 (02.11%) cases died due genital organ involvement. Non pathological means unnatural causes of death were found in 11 (07.75%) cases in which mainly cause of death was injury 09 (06.34%). Other causes were asphyxia as a result of hanging in 01 (0.70%) cases and 01 (0.70%) cases died due to poisoning. In 16 (11.27%) cases cause of death could not be ascertained by the autopsy examination.
