Abstract

Blunt abdominal trauma is one of the leading preventable causes of death in developing countries, and is a major health and social problem. It generally affects the young people, and accounts for loss of more years of productive life, than lost due to cancer and heart diseases put together. The aim of this study was analyze the profile of blunt abdominal injuries among the total number of autopsies performed.

Materials for the present observational cross sectional study were collected from the medico legal autopsies, showing blunt abdominal injuries, performed at the mortuary of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, during the period from 1st December, 2014 to 30th November, 2015.

A total 2819 autopsies performed during the study period out of these 296 cases were of blunt abdominal injuries (about 10.5% of total cases). Among these majority were males (83.44%) and majority were from the age group of 21 to 30 years (34.80%). The mode of injury in majority of cases was RTA (79.05%). And the most commonly involved organ was liver (73.65%).

Youngsters were most commonly affected and the most common cause was RTA. Liver and spleen were the most common affected organs.
