Investigation on the AGED LIP-Gloss stains by TLC and FT-IR

Abstract

Twenty five (25) samples of lip-glosses were analyzed by thinlayer chromatography using different solvent systems and visual aids (daylight, ultraviolet light, and iodine fuming) on fifteen branded and non-branded (local) samples. In this study, the best solvent system has been found to be chloroform: n-hexane (2:8) for the fresh and aged samples of 1–4 weeks old stains. Further an attempt has also been made to analyze and differentiate randomly selected five samples through FT-IR. This study was conducted to determine the influence of environmental conditions on the samples with the passage of time as the sample for forensic analysis requires time for examination due to the pendency and large number of the cases reported in forensic science laboratories. It will offer the potential of being able to identify the lip-gloss even after a month using TLC and FTIR conjointly. Investigations would get a lead with evidentiary samples of lip-glosses, typically worn by women of medium and high societies (who are disproportionately victims of sexual assault), if encountered in Forensic cases.
