Abstract

In this autopsy based study of sudden cardiac death(SCD), various pathologies were evaluated. Except for genetic causes, certain age groups (46–60 years)(males> females) & postmenopausal women are more prone for SCD. Out of the diverse etiologies, Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the mega contributor of SCD. The prevalence of etiologies is also corelated to built of the person, time of the day, socioeconomic status (an uprising trend in the middle class), habits and behaviours (tobacco & alcohol), pre existing disease (hypertension, previous MI etc), day to day activity. The symptoms are mainly Chest pain in coronary causes & either dropping to dead or dyspnea in non coronary causes.

The autopsy findings are abnormal morphology of heart, left ventricle wall gross thickening (specially in non coronary group), cardiomegaly, cord like coronaries, narrowed coronary ostia, old MI scar., deranged coronary arteries. Thrombosis in a setting of CAD is the most common finding (LAD> LCX>RCA).
