Profile study of Sudden death in male brought for postmortem examination at Sir T. Hospital, Bhavnagar

Death is said to be sudden or unexpected in a person not known to have been suffering from any dangerous disease, injury or poisoning is found dead or dies within 24 hours after the onset of terminal illness.

To determine and assess cause of death and incidence of sudden death of male in Bhavnagar region.

The present prospective study had been conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College & Sir T. General Hospital, Bhavnagar, during the period from 1^st May 2014 to 30^th April 2015.

In our study majority of case [78 cases (32.23%)] were observed in the age group of 51–60 years. Majority [206 cases (85.12%)] of victims of sudden death were Hindus by religion and majority of victims [151 cases (62.40%)] belongs to Urban area. In our study majority of the sudden death [144 cases (59.50%)] were due to the diseases of cardiovascular system, followed by diseases of respiratory system [61 cases (25.21%)].

The suddenness and unexpectedness of deaths and their frequent occurrence should be considered in planning emergency services to tackle the immediate events prior to death.
