Abstract

Hanging, and strangulation constitute a major type of mechanical asphyxial deaths. Deaths due to compression of neck by ligature viz. hanging and strangulation are one of the most important unnatural deaths encountered by forensic experts. The present study was conducted in Department of Forensic Medicine, B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad to understand the incidences of different types in such deaths at different places. The most vulnerable age to be the victim of hanging was 21 - 30 years. Hindu males were most common victims. Married people were more prone to such deaths. Indoor areas were preferred more for committing the act and soft ligature material was the most commonly used ligature material.
