“Crime against women” is a very burning topic for female identity in text and culture of India. A detailed year wise distribution of the crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh during last three years 1995, 1996, and 1997 (as per records from U.P. police office) was studied and showed declining trends in 1997. Amongst the various crimes against women including rape, molestation, abduction, eve-teasing, dowry death, and dowry harassment, in 1995, majority of cases (i.e. 3413) comprised of eve-teasing, however, in 1996 and 1997, majority of cases i.e. 3651 and 2999 respectively were of dowry harassment. Rape is one of the most heinous crime against women. Study suggests different measures to prevent crime against women including enactment of tougher laws for the offenders involved in the crime.
