The present study was planned to analyse the socio-demographic profile & factors leading to substance abuse among patients admitted at De-addiction centres in Durg, Chhattisgarh. In this cross-sectional study, all the patients admitted at the Deaddiction centres during the study period were interviewed. A pretested questionnaire was used to interview them. Total 460 patients were interviewed out of which 79.78% were males, 52.61% were in the age group of 17–40 years, 60.22% were married & 74.13% were from rural setup. Substance abuse was most common: in lower socio-economic class (55.65%), in graduates (41.09%) & in students (31.30%). It was relatively common in persons living alone (42.83%) & having family history (63.7%).
Average age of initiation of substance abuse was 16–20 years (46.3%). Multiple substance abuse (88.48%) was prevalent with alcohol (50.64%) as the most common substance abused.
Family problems (29.78%) were the main reasons for initiation of substance abuse followed by peer pressure (19.78%). Continuous craving (58.04%) was the main reason for visit to de-addiction centre with 28.04% cases brought by social workers.
