A preliminary study of age and sex in relation to fingerprint ridge density among Malaysian Indian population in management & science university (MSU)

Abstract

The significance of fingerprints is inimitable in every individual in comparison to the genetic material within a cell known as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA); every individual holds a unique fingerprint pattern that is patented for identification. This research evaluated the correlation between age and sex and fingerprint ridge density amongst the Malaysian Indian population in Management and Science University (MSU). 111 samples (Male = 40; Female = 71) of 10 fingerprints were acquired, on a fingerprint card, from the Malaysian Indian population in MSU in the age range of 18–27. Each fingerprint was speculated and analysed in an area of 5 × 5 mm within three regions around the core: ulnar, distal and radial regions. The results showed that Indian females have higher density of fingerprint ridge than Indian males within the defined area of 25 mm2. There is a reduction of 1 unit ridge as an Indian female grow two months older based on their left little finger.
