Antibacterial effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Punica granatum pericarp and seed on the food borne pathogens

Abstract

The pericarp and seed of the Punica granatum has been commonly used for the treatment of diarrhea. The aim of this research is to study the antibacterial effect of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the Punica granatum pericarp and seed on the food borne pathogens. The pathogens used are Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The fruits extracts were obtained by standard procedures and were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility test. Among the aqueous and ethanolic extraction, the extraction of pericarp and seed with ethanol exerts a profound clear inhibition zone that range from 10mm to 23mm in Staphylococcus aureus compared to Escherichia coli at all concentrations with p< 0.05.The aqueous and ethanolic extraction of pericarp and seed was found to be bactericidal for both tested pathogens.
