Frequent usage of insecticides has often lead to the development of resistance in mosquitoes, thereby impede the control efforts. The objective of the study was to investigate the species population and non-specific esterase activity of mosquitoes collected from Kampung Dusun Nanding, Hulu Langat. UV fluorescent bulb and UV light emitting diode (LED) were used for mosquito sampling. There was a total of 383 mosquitoes collected, which 68% was caught by UV fluorescent bulb and 32% was caught by light emitting diode with 76% of females and 24% of males. The collection includes 80.16% of Culex quinquefasciatus, 18.28% of Armigeres spp., 1.04% of Aedes albopictus and 0.52% of Ae. aegypti. Quantitative results of non-specific esterase activity demonstrate resistance ratio at 4.31 (RR>1) indicating that Cx. quinquefasciatus was resistance. Field strain of Cx. quinquefasciatus showed significantly higher non specific esterase enzyme activity (1.36×10−10 moles of naphtol equivalent/min/μg of protein), as compared to lab strain (3.16×10−11 moles of naphtol equivalent/min/μg of protein) (p=0.027, p<0.05). The findings demonstrate that there was a potential insecticide resistance in Cx. quinquefasciatus at Kampung Dusun Nanding, indicating the urge of resistance management in Hulu Langat district.
