Evaluation on the impact of Diabetes-Medication therapy adherence clinic (Diabetes-Mtac) towards management of type 2 diabetes mellitus patents

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that became more prevalent over the years with increasing mortality rate. Thus, to ameliorate the monitoring and management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), Diabetes-Medication Therapy Adherence Clinic (Diabetes-MTAC) was established for patients who are incompliant to their treatment plan. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of visits to Diabetes-MTAC towards the management of T2DM based on the changes in fasting blood glucose (FBG) and HbAlc levels.

A retrospective observational study was conducted among 213 T2DM patients who had attended Diabetes-MTAC between the year of 2015–2016 in a tertiary care hospital. Data was analysed based on descriptive statistics and analysis of variance (ANOVA).

A total of 56.8% of Malay, 25.8% of Indian and 17.4% of Chinese patients with majority of older adult patients with age group of 50–59 (37.6%) years were involved in this study. Analysis on the BMI level showed that most of the patients were overweight (33.3%) and correlatively has comorbidity of hyperlipidemia (94.9%). Both FBG and HbAlc level showed significant changes (p<0.05) after consecutive visits to Diabetes-MTAC. Substantial reduction of FBG was observed in 2nd visit while significant down-trending was noticed in HbAlc level after consecutive visit to Diabetes-MTAC.

This study showed that Diabetes-MTAC facilitates the management of T2DM and improves patient's quality of life.
