Study of knowledge, attitude and perception toward ‘Organ donation’

Transplantation of human organs for therapeutic purposes, as a life saving procedure, is among the latest advances in the field of medicine. Organ donation following brain stem death is infrequent in India and still a new concept for general population. Organ donation rates could be increased by enhancing the quality of hospital care and ensuring that the request for donation is handled in a way that meets the families ’informational and emotional needs. Keeping this in mind, present study conducted to assess perception of undergraduate students towards organ donation to guide proper organ donation information to the patient in future.

Present prospective cross sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 100 students were enquired with equal males and females above 18 years, who were willing to participate in survey, after obtaining their informed written consent in GMERS Medical College, Sola, Ahmedabad. The students were asked to fill up the answers on a proforma, comprising questions regarding their knowledge, attitude and perception regarding organ donation and its legal aspects.

Total 72% of candidates were aware of concept of organ donation but, as in practice and attitude regarding organ donation still require awareness. There was no statically significant difference between perceptions of male and female.

In Organ donation not only the knowledge, but attitude and practice are also much more better which can help to make future of organ donation more optimistic.
