Usage of food label information among supermarket shoppers in Shah Alam, Malaysia

Abstract

Most of the buyers do not get it the utilization of nourishment names. Those who are influenced by this wellbeing issue are customers who don't allow significance to nourishment name. This is due to less knowledge of food label information among consumers. The main aim of the study is to find out the usage of food label information by urban consumers in Shah Alam. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 274 supermarket shoppers in Shah Alam. Questionnaire related to food label usage and awareness were distributed. The questionnaire is divided into three parts which are Part A on demographic factors, Part B on awareness on the food label and Part C practice and usage of food label information. Majority of the consumers (71.5%) claims that they check the food label and the main reason for checking (52.9%) is for health concern. A total of (76.6%) of consumers are aware of the food label. The majority (59.1%) prefer shopping on weekends. The association between gender, income and food label usage is significant. (p=0.009, 0.023) respectively. Food label awareness is high among Shah Alam shoppers. They frequently use food label information while buying pre-packaged food products due to health concerns. More education and promotion should be given to shoppers regarding the importance of food labels
