This study helped to determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy among middle-aged urban population with known diabetes in Selangor. 186 patients who ages from 40 to 64 years old were examined for presence of diabetic retinopathy. After a full history taking we performed patients visual acuity, slit lamp and fundus photography. Fundus photography were graded as having no diabetic retinopathy (DR), mild Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR), moderate NPDR, severe NPDR and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR). Out of 186 patients examined, 88(47.3%) are males and 98(52.7%) are females, and the mean age was 53.58. The presence of any DR detected in this study was 39.2%. In patients with DR, majority had mild NPDR (25.80%), followed by moderate NPDR (8.60%), PDR (3.20%), and while severe NPDR was 1.60%. From the results it showed the duration of diabetes, age group and status of diabetes (controlled and uncontrolled) is highly associated with presence of DR. Finally result showed that vision loss is highly associated with more serious stage of DR.
