Wound healing is an intricate and dynamic progression of replacing devitalized cellular arrangemet and tissue layers. This study is used to compare the wound healing property of Ocimum sanctum L. and Piper betle using the excision wound model. The aim is to investigate the wound contraction in Wistar rats and compare the wound healing activity between Ocimum sanctum L. and Piper betle. The leaves of the Ocimum sanctum L. and Piper betle were extracted using maceration technique and made into a 10% extract ointment. The animals were segregated into control group, standard group (Betadine cream) and 2 test groups (treated with 10% of Piper betle and Ocimum sanctum L. extract ointment), each group containing 6 rats. For the excision wound, histopathological study was done. Results: Wound healing potential is compared between Ocimum sanctum L. and Piper betle were studied in rats and significantly (p<0.05) accelerated wound healing. The control group which left untreated showed a delayed gradual percentage of contraction of 4% on day 2, 36% on day 6, 60% on day 9, 88% on day 12 and 96% on day 14. Comparatively, the standard group showed faster and larger margin of wound contraction where it was 16% on day 2, 56% on day 6, 80% on day 9, 96% on day 12 and 100% on day 14. Similarly, Piper betle group possess the same margin with the standard group where it was 12% on day 2, 48% on day 6, 76% on day 9, 96% day 12 and 100% on day 14. Lastly, the group treated with Ocimum sanctum L. shows lesser margin of wound contraction in the rats where it was 8% on day 2, 52% on day 6, 64% on day 9, 92% on day 12 and 96% on day 14.
