Methamphetamine (METH) has been particularly expanded its popularity in Malaysia with the presence of strong psychostimulant with complicated neurotoxicity. It has been proposed that oxidative stress responsible for METH induced toxicity. Therefore, this research aims to determine the neuroprotective effects of Olea europaea against oxidative stress caused by METH.
Phytochemical studies were done to examine its constituents in O. europaeaalong with toxicity studies. Animal behaviour were done to study the effects of olive oil on drug seeking behaviour. Besides that, oxidative stress markers, reduced glutathione (GSH) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) level of Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) were determined using ELISA kit.
Phytochemical studies indicated that there are higher percentage of fatty acid in O. europaea and toxicity studies shows that O. europaea are nontoxic even given in high dosage to the rat. The results of the current study also showed that the rats that received O. europaea had significantly less tendency towards METH (p<0.05). Besides that, results also show that administration of O. europaea to METH induced rats shows a significant increase in GSH concentration level (p<0.05) and decrease level MDA concentration (p<0.05) in VTA.
In conclusion, O. europaea can prevent toxicity induced METH by alleviating the oxidative stress.
