The human auricle or the pinna has been considered to be unique due to the eminences and depressions on the lateral surface with considerable variations among individuals. Malaysia has a multiethnic population with three main ethnic groups namely Malays, Chinese and Indians.There is sparse data available on the variations in the shape of pinna among theseethnic groups. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the racial and sexual variation of the pinna among Malaysian young adults.
This studywas conducted on 138 subjects (69 males and 69 females) aged between 18 and 28 years,from a private university in Malaysia. The length, the width of the pinna were measured and it's shape was determined.Descriptive and inferential statistics was used.
Statistical analysis showed that the measurementsof the two ears in an individualwere almost equal (p > 0.05). However, statistically significant differences were noted in the biometrics of the auricle among the gender. Males were found have larger ears when compared to females.The difference in ear biometrics between the males and females was statistically significant while the differences among the three ethnic groups in Malaysia was statistically insignificant.
Thereis a significant difference in ear biometrics between the two gender.This indicates a role for ear biometrics as an evidence in court of law.It also may provide useful information to surgeons involved in reconstructive surgery of the pinna.
