Abstract

Assessment is in the heart of the education process. Technology Enhanced Assessment (TEA) has been developed consequently to the online learning and as part of the digitalization of the educational services. TEA includes all and any form of assessment that may be enhanced by technology using distant “online communication”. The credibility of the education process is mostly depending on the reliability and validity of TEA. The current paper is a narrative review article that aimed to draw an overview for the TEA including tools and platforms used for TEA, discuss the feedbacks of students and lecturers toward TEA and to highlight issues related to effectiveness of TEA. It is concluded that TEA is an unavoidable progress in education and the attitude of learners and lecturers is mostly positive and the negative attitude is collectively related to external factors such as availability of resources or the quality of the used platform. There are many trials and recommendations to ensure the reliability and validity of TEA. Factors affecting the TEA effectiveness can be categorized to those related to academic aspects including the need for good learning materials to produce different varieties of high quality exam questions with having rubric for marking, those related to technological aspects such as presence of a stable and secure platform able to detect academic dishonesty e.g., using biometrics for identification of students, using plagiarism detection software, and the user related aspects as both students and lecturers should have a good skills to deal with such technology.
