To study the chronological pattern of beginning and completion of fusion of sagittal suture, endocranially and ectocranially. To study gender wise variations in fusion of sagittal suture.
The study was conducted on 100 cases received for post-mortem examination during the period of December 2010 to September 2012 to P.D.U. Medical College & Hospital, Rajkot. Correlation for the ratio of ectocranial suture score to endocranial suture score with the age was calculated in each suture on the basis of Spearman's correlation coefficient (rho).
In sagittal suture, in male, endocranially the age for beginning of fusion was 39.93(±4.88) years and the age of complete fusion was 63.42(±1.37) years while in female, endocranially the age for beginning of fusion was 31.09 (±4.38) years and the age of complete fusion was 74.06(±1.88) years. In sagittal suture, in male, ectocranially the age for beginning of fusion was 44.27(±5.65) years and the age of complete fusion was 67.72(±5.05) years while in female, ectocranially the age for beginning of fusion was 41.14(±7.09) years and the age of complete fusion was 78.13(±2.39) years.
When sagittal skull suture is the only available sample to determine age of the part of the corpus, due precautions are to be taken before opining age even in the range of a decade. For estimation of age, endocranial sutures were found more accurate than ectocranial suture in both genders.
