Formalin has been considered as “golden standard” in fixation of tissues since ages. It is known for its good embalming properties and antiseptic nature. But, due to its harmful effects on its users and the environment, there is a need to find an alternative to it. Natural substitutes such as honey, jaggery, sugar syrup etc. are being explored so that the harmful effects of formalin can be avoided. These naturally occurring substitutes being universally available and cost-friendly poses a good alternative to formalin. Further, not much research work has been done on the naturalalternatives of formalin in the past. The aim of this study is to compare the fixative efficacies of two naturally occurring substances- honey and jaggery with the universal fixative-formalin and to find out which is better among them. The tissue sections were analyzed for histomorphological details using light microscope. One way ANOVA test has been used for statistical analysis. The study has yielded efficient outcomes indicating that honey and jaggery can be used as safer substitute to formalin in tissuefixation.
