Morphometric analysis of human talus for estimation of cadaveric stature - An autopsy based study

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to estimate the cadaveric stature by morphometric analysis of talus bone. 100 pair of talus bones of known sex obtained from the unknown or unclaimed cadavers brought to the mortuary for autopsy were included in the study. Nine different measurements of right and left talus of 50 males and 50 females were measured in this crosssectional study. On applying linear regression correlation, a statistically significant strong correlation (r>0.7) was found between cadaveric stature and TW, TL, TrB, HH, TH, LPAS and BPAS measurements of talus bone of right side and TW, TL, TrB, HH and BPAS measurements of left side talus. Among all the different parameters, height of the head (HH) of the right tali had the strongest correlation (r=0.903) and maximum R2 value of 0.815 with standard error of estimate of 2.8. Stepwise multilinear regression analysis confirmed that correlation coefficient increased gradually with increase in the number of variables up to the last step of regression with Talar head height (HH) being most significant. A strong positive correlation of around 90% and increased R2 value with small standard error of estimate proved talus bone to be a significant bone in determination of cadaveric stature.
