Establishing identity from unknown human skeletal remains is one of the most challenging problems which confront a medicolegal expert. Cranium is said to be frequently the best preserved of all the skeletal remains. Of the numerous parameters used to establish identity ‘Age’ is one of the most important. Variability in acceptance of skull vault suture closure and its correlation with age of the individual and limited data availability in the Maharashtrian population facilitated initiation of the study.
The study undertook morphological evaluation (during Autopsy) of ectocranial and endocrinal closure of skull vault sutures (using Acsadi Nemeskeri Method) of 200 medicolegal cases brought for autopsy at Rural Medical College, Loni during 2009- 2011.The pattern of suture closure was Sagittal followed by Coronal with Lambdoid being the last in both amles and females. Endocranial closure followed a similar pattern with endocranial closure occurring prior to ectocranial closure.
