Abstract

Identification is a key component in any forensic investigation based on the physical evidence left by the offenders. Two dimensional (2D) impressions are commonly found at the crime scene, which aids individual identification. This present research aimed to determine gender from 2D foot impression among Kagay-anon population in Philippines. The study recruited consentedpeople including 201 males and 199 females aged above 18 years old. Following the standard procedure footprint samples were collected from the participants. From each footprint, five designated areas were chosen for ridge density analysis, the method described by “Acree”. The result shows that female footprints have higher mean ridge density than male footprints in all designated areas, except the heel area where male has a higher mean ridge density than female. The ridge density on left footprint is different from right footprint, thus showing the bilateral asymmetry. The result findings are presented in the form of tables and graphs, for use in crime scene application.
