Evaluating the relationship between serum electrolyte concentration for time since death: A prospective study

Abstract

Estimation of time since death is an important step inforensic sciences, however there is no reliable and universal method available to find out the postmortem interval. Estimation of serum electrolyte has been found to have significant association with the time since death in previous studies.

To evaluate the relationship between serum electrolyte concentration for time since death.

Hundred subjects were studied for the serum electrolyte concentration at Department of Forensic Medicine, India using a 10 ml blood from the right femoral artery. Estimation of Na+ and K+ electrolytes was done immediately by uame photometry.

Mean age of study cohort was 56.23±12.32 years which ranged from 12 to 88 years. Majority were males (68%). Most common PMI was 18.01–24 (34%) followed by 24.01–30 hours (17%). Mean Potassium and Sodium concentration at 18.01–24 was 25.78 ± 5.78 meq./l and 118.24±14.78 meq./l respectively (p<0.001). A decreasing tread was revealed for serum sodium and increasing for serum potassium with time since death.

Serum sodium and potassium concentration has significant association with the time since death.
