The use of anabolic steroids was dramatically increased not only among athletes as a doping drug but also among young recreational exercisers with many health effects. This study was performed to assess the effects of anabolic steroids on the reproductive system of adult male albino rats and the modulating effects of silymarin and fenugreek seeds extract.
The experiment was carried out on 120 adult male albino rats. The animals were weighed to be randomly allocated into 6 groups; group I: Control group, group II: Nandrolone Decanoate group, group III: silymarin orally treated group, group IV: fenugreek seeds extract orally treated group, group (V): Nandrolone Decanoate and silymarin and group (VI): Nandrolone Decanoate and fenugreek seeds extract. At the end of the experiment, all rats were sacrificed, and samples were taken for biochemical analysis and histopathological examination.
Anabolic steroids treated rats showed a decrease in serum FSH, LH and testosterone levels with marked degenerative changes and necrosis were observed in histopathological examination of the testis. Improvement was observed in rats treated with silymarin and fenugreek seeds extract.
Anabolic steroids have a toxic effect on the reproductive system of male albino rats with improvement by treatment with silymarin and fenugreek seeds extract.
