Dermal toxicity and wound healing activity of Coriandrum sativum L. leaves extract and its formulated ointment in wistar rats

Wound is referred as any physical injury that breaks the skin layer. Wound healing is known as the regeneration of tissues whereby the new layer of skin is formed. Wound healing follows a cascade of events starting with homeostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling of tissues. Although there were many studies have been conducted proving various traditional plants exhibiting wound healing properties but wound healing properties of coriander leaves were limited. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the wound healing activity using the extract of Coriandrum Sativum L leaves (CSL) using formulated ointment in Wistar rats. CSL were extracted successively using methanol in a soxhlet extractor for 36 hours at 60°C. Skin toxicity was done on rats. For screening excision wound, animals were divided into four groups (n=6). Group-1 is treated with vehicle (control). Group-2 and 3 were treated with 10% and 20% of extract ointment respectively. Group-4 was treated with standard Betadine ointment. Methanolic extract of C. sativum L. (MECS) was applied topically on the excision wound of the rat for two times per day. The parameter observed were percentage of wound contraction. ANOVA test was used to analyze the results obtained for excision wound was statistically significant (P<0.05). The MECS extracts with 20% extract has shown a significant wound-healing activity that was supported by decrease in the period of epithelialization and also increase in rate of contraction of wound in experimental animals. The MECS extracts have proved to possess wound healing properties and a higher concentration of the extract has facilitated as a good choice of remedy for woundhealing.
