Evaluation of In vitro synergistic and toxicity effects of Chromolaena odorata L. extracts with antibiotics

Abstract

Natural products in this case the weed shrub Chromolaenaodorata or Siam weed is investigated for its antibiotic effects in vitro. The methanolic extract alone has demonstrated the most antibacterial effect towards S. aureus and S. pyogene. Interestingly, synergistic antimicrobial effect in combination withmethanolic extract using tetracycline and ciprofloxacin was found in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria namely S. pyogene, and Klebsiella spp. for tetracycline (3.98 ± 0.24 cm; 2.61 ± 0.12 cm) and for Ciprofloxacin, S. aureus, S. pyogene, E. coli (3.28 ± 0.16 cm; 3.79 ± 0.07 cm; 4.37 ± 0.10 cm; p<0.05). Phytochemical screening revealed positive results for carbohydrate, protein, alkaloid, flavonoid and tannin as main constituents in C. odorata. It may seem that this weed may contain potent natural compounds for alternative antibiotic treatment or formulation as surface or sub-cutaneous creams.
