A systematic review on techniques for restoration of obliterated sequence numbers engraved on different metallic surfaces

Abstract

Sequence numbers are generally removed or obliterated from the items such as vehicles, firearms in order to conceal their true identity. Restoration of sequence numbers proves to be useful in the investigation processes as they are associated with not only the manufacturer as well as the first owner or further. The main aim of the study was to systematically review the literature on techniques aimed for recovery of obliterated sequence numbers present on various metal surfaces. For this review, search was performed in the databases Web of science, Pub Med, Research gate. 290 publications were identified in the initial research, out of which 13 studies were selected for review after doing the inclusion and exclusion. Chemical etching is the most accepted technique used for recovery of obliterated sequence numbers. It is seen that most of chemical etching restorations successfully developed on metal substrates i.e. steel, aluminium, iron and copper.
