mental foramen position evaluation can help in medicolegal identification of humans; so we conducted this analysis among Egyptian population to identify the commonest site of the mental foramen and to asses’ gender based position differences of mental foramen.
This study was retrospective on 100 Cone Beam Computed Tomography radiographs of Egyptian dentate patients. The location of the representation of the mental foramen was traced. Measurements for evaluating distance of superior and inferior borders of the foramen in relation to the lower border of the mandible were made using the reference lines drawn from anatomical landmarks. The data so obtained were statistically analyzed using chi-square test.
The study was on digital radiographs of 39 male and 47 female. The commonest position of the MF was in in line with second premolar and in between second premolar and the first molar in males and females too (P > 0.05). Statistically significant differences were found between sexes regarding site 4&5 in horizontal plane in left side, and distance from MF to superior border, inferior border of the mandible and to mid line in both sides. There was a correlation in left side only between age and distance between site 4, inferior border of the mandible and mental foramen; as distance decreases on age increases. In binary logistic regression analysis probability of being male increased on distance increase between mental foramen and inferior border of the mandible or midline in Left side but probability of being male decreases when distance between mental foramen and superior border increases or when mental foramen is between the second premolar and the first molar or in line with second premolar in horizontal plane in right side.
Horizontal plane site of the MF is not a sexually dimorphic feature but distance between MF and inferior border of the mandible or midline is, although depending on mental foramen measurements only is not enough for sex identification.
