Diatoms are one of the substantial extant taxa of eukaryotic unicellular organisms carrying autotrophic mode of nutrition. These diatoms species are extensively diverse with approximated 200 genera comprehensively comprising of 10-12 thousand approximately known species. The characteristic features of diatoms encompassing sensitivity towards immense variety of environmental variables delivers geographers with ample opportunities of research development. The current study focuses on establishing diatoms as geographical indicators via studying their morphological characteristic and geographical distribution in Sonipat District of Haryana, India. The presence of different genera of diatoms at selected sites in Sonipat district is very useful for medico legal purposes such as dumping cases and unclaimed body related to doubtful drowning.
