Abstract

Bite marks are impressions that are caused by teeth alone or in combination with other oral parts. Bite marks can be either found on the skin or deformable substrates [ex: food]. Bite marks found on inanimate objects like foodstuffs allow the morphological characterization of the teeth and enable the collection of biological traces on the surface of the object. Since human dentition is unique and inimitable, bite marks have been used as confirmatory evidence in the Court of law, for more than half a century. The human bite mark analysis includes a descriptive procedure, which includes the comparison class and individual characteristics. Recently 3D method of analysis of bite marks has become a highlighted procedure in comparison with a 2D method. Even though bite marks obtained from food materials serve as crucial evidence, there has been little research done on this topic. The objective of this paper was to conduct a study on the analysis of bite marks from food materials. The study focused on the identification of individuals from the bite mark evidence and the best reliable techniques for the identification of individuals. This article throws light on the methods of collection, examination, and comparison of the bite mark evidence.
